Lily: 1 Year and 10 Weeks (5/3/10 - 5/9/10)

Right after getting our washer working again, our riding lawnmower decided to crap out on us. One of the parts turning the belt seized up and melted right after Paul had mowed half of the front yard and a small portion of the back yard on Tuesday evening, causing our lawn to look ridiculous for the next few days. He got the necessary parts ordered on Thursday but, unfortunately, they won’t be in until next Monday at the earliest. The John Deere parts supplier was right next to the outlet mall in Howell so we did some shopping after ordering the parts then hurried home so that Paul could push mow the yard before dark. It is funny because our Honda push mower was bought by my grandfather back in 1990. My grandmother handed it down to my parents after he died in 1992 then they gave it to us when we bought our house in 2002. That crazy mower is now 20 years old and still runs like a dream. Unfortunately, it takes about 4 hours to mow the entire yard using it so Paul only had the time and energy to do the front yard and the part of the back closest to the house.

We did some Mother’s Day shopping after work on Friday but it was a horribly rainy day. We covered Lily in my raincoat and got ourselves soaked running into JCPenney. You could hear the rain pounding down on the roof of the store the entire time we were in there. While I shopped, Paul walked Lily around the store where she found a display of kid-sized Adirondack chairs that she just loved. She spent the entire time sitting in the chairs and practicing getting in and out of them. I thought that they were adorable and they were half-off so we ended up buying her one. The downpour still hadn’t let up when it was time to leave, so Paul retrieved the truck for us. The poor guy got absolutely drenched. On our way home, I ran into Kohl’s to buy her a cute flower-shaped side table to go with it. Paul and Lily stayed in the car as it was still raining cats and dogs.

I worked an overtime afternoon shift at the ABG Lab on Saturday so my mom came over to help watch Lily so Paul could work on his outdoor projects. My shift was from 3:30pm to midnight but my mom came a little early and went with Lily and me to do our Costco shopping. I usually avoid the store on the weekends and now I remember why. It was a madhouse. However, Lily was fascinated by the craziness so she was a good girl and sat in the cart without complaint the entire time. While we were gone, Paul put together her Adirondack chair. She was so excited to see it sitting in the middle of the living room when we got home. She played on it pretty much all day. She kept standing on it which would prompt us to tell her to sit on her butt. She would then flash us a sly smile and slowly slide down in the chair until her legs shot out in front of her and she plopped quickly onto her butt. Apparently she thought it was a fun game. While I worked, my mom and Lily entertained each other and Paul put up some of the garden fence. My mom left shortly after making dinner for everyone. We are getting spoiled by her good cooking every week! Paul said that Lily was very sweet that evening. She kept poking Reiley in the face (not the sweet part) but then when Paul said to leave him alone because he was trying to go night-night, she covered him up with her blankie. What a little doll! My shift went well and I got home shortly before 1am. When I got home, I was pretty wired for some reason so I cleaned up around the house and wrapped the Mother’s Day presents.

Sunday was my second official Mother’s Day! As has been our tradition since before I can remember, we had brunch with my parents, my grandma, and my uncle Lee at the Davison Country Club. We left pretty early because there had been construction on northbound US-23 on Friday that had traffic pretty backed up but there was no longer any construction happening so we got to Davison about an hour before our brunch reservations. We would have gone to my parents’ house to hang out before brunch but Lily was taking a nap in the car so I chose to keep us in motion to keep her asleep. I wanted her to get a good long nap so that she wouldn’t be grumpy at brunch! To kill the time, I took Paul on a driving tour around Davison, pointing out my elementary school, middle school, and high school. It is always fun to walk down memory lane. Lily was still asleep when we got to the Country Club but woke up in a good mood as I was getting her out of the car. The brunch was very nice and Lily behaved wonderfully. We all completely overstuffed ourselves with the delicious bananas foster French toast.

After brunch, we went back to my parents’ house and hung out with them and my grandmother. We had a nice visit. After my grandma left, we headed outside to walk off our giant meal and take Lily for a ride in my old wagon. It had resided in their old leaky metal shed for the past 20 years so the metal and wood wagon suffered some water damage. My dad spent a lot of time replacing, refurbishing, and repainting and now it looks great and works wonderfully. After our walk, we let Lily have fun running around the yard. Her favorite activity was crawling up the curb onto their driveway then having us help her step back off of it. She did it over and over and over again. Whenever she crawled up the curb, she said “U-PUH” with a big emphasis on the “puh”. It was adorable.

I can’t believe that Lily has been at her new daycare for over a month already. She is doing very well there. She no longer cries when we drop her off and instead, happily reaches for Tammy after I give her a hug and kiss goodbye. I worried that the two year old, Jack, would be jealous of her as he initially seemed to be but now he loves her and yells “Baby!” when we arrive every morning. Lily loves him as well and laughs at every little thing he does. I am worried that perhaps she already has her first boyfriend. AAAH! When we pick Lily up, she usually greets us at the door as she apparently runs to it when she hears us pull up. As we walk up to the door, she presses her face up to it and pounds on it, laughing and bouncing with delight then gives us each huge hugs when we go inside. Who could ask for a better greeting? Lily is even doing well with her long car rides back and forth each day. We have a routine now. In the morning, I sit in back with Lily while Paul drives and I feed her a second breakfast of a waffle with peanut butter (she has a first breakfast of cheerios, blueberries, and butter bread toast in her high chair before we leave and a third breakfast once she gets to Tammy’s (the girl likes to eat!). On the way home, I sit in back with her again and she snacks on lunch leftovers (usually goldfish crackers). This keeps her entertained and gives me extra time with her. She is super sweet and frequently tries to feed me as I am feeding her. She also likes to give me her sippy cup and giggles with delight when I pretend to take huge gulps and finish with a big, “AAAH!” She loves to make that sound with a huge smile on her face after taking a big drink as well. I can see her sense of humor developing now as she sometimes holds out a cracker to feed me and then laughingly snatches it away right before I bite it. Silly girl!

Here are some pictures from this week.

I love her little shoes compared to ours:

Lily enjoying eating leftover mashed potatoes with a spoon on Monday. Note that she is using her left hand:

Seriously, can I enjoy just one meal without the paparazzi in my face?:

You can see the wheels turning in her head:

What if I use the spoon this way instead?:

It didn’t work for the mashed potatoes but it was awesome at spearing carrots:

Yummy:

And eating it, of course:

After playing on the curb forever, Lily sat in the grass with me and stole my sunglasses. She then proceeded to try to figure out how to put them on:

They ended up in her mouth, of course:

How do these things work?:

I’ll just laugh and chew on them while I figure it out:

Finally, she put them on her face:

She was delighted by the reaction that she got from us so she continued to put them on and take them off over and over:

Yay! What a great Mother’s Day:
